The simple shading looks nice, and the animation is fluid and very smooth.

Some things could be improved about it, though, in my opinion.

The highlight on the bottom right of the emote collides a bit with the mouth when it's closed. Rather than making it seem like a straight mouth, like in <img src="e.deviantart.com/emoticons/b/b…" width="15" height="15" alt="" title=" (Blank Stare)" />, it looks more like the emote is frowning, which doesn't really fit to me.

Also, when the emote is grinning at the widest point, the mouth itself looks a little odd and jagged to me. I can understand what you were aiming for, but perhaps simply moving the mouth upwards a slight bit would improve the end result.
